Alright, so I am an incoming freshman and although I've had a strong academic upbringing as well as strong study habits I am a little worried about the intensity of the classes as well as how hard it will be to focus on my academics with all the things going on around me.

Hey man. It's good that you've had a strong academic foundation. That is important and it is a strong determinant of how tough your first year in college will be. However, first-year classes are not that difficult, they just require work and study time. Coursework begins to become more rigorous and begins demanding more time as you move closer to your major classes (which you will more than likely not reach until the end of your second year).
There will be a ton of opportunities to get distracted. You must discipline yourself and learn to prioritize (school is always first). Believe me when I say that's easier said than done.

Thanks for your comment.

hello, ill be a freshman in the fall and was wondering how do u join CASA? is there an application process or anything out of the ordinary to join?

Unfortunately, freshmen can't join the CASA executive board until second semester (after you have accumulated credit hours and have established a GPA). However, we are encouraging freshmen to join The Element Student Activities Staff which is a subsidiary group of CASA. Read the details and apply here www.morehousecasa.com/elementBASE.html

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Wats the party scene like?

The AUC offers many opportunities for students to balance work and play, whether it be getting involved on campus, or like mentioned above, going out and partying. You will find that there will be few great parties on campus and great house parties within walking distance from campus. It is almost guaranteed that there will be a party at a club every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday sponsored by one of many party promotion groups in the AUC. Most of these party promotion groups will provide shuttles to and from the club. If you ever want to get away from the AUC party scene, then do not hesitate to explore other campuses like Emory and Georgia State. In my opinion, the AUC and ATL offer a great party scene. You might find it hard to enjoy parties when you get back home.

I assume that most people major in the areas that are of most interest to them and align with their career goals. So to ask whether or not a certain major is "hard" or "tough" depends on the person. It is safe to assume that the sciences demand a lot more out of students with regards to required labs and what not, but in reality, the major itself is as hard as you make it. The best way to enjoy your freshman year and still maintain a healthy GPA is to manage your time.

Martin, i'd have to agree with Justin. Everyone should take their majors seriously. Science majors tend to spend more hours in classes, labs, and recitations so balancing your time becomes a little more difficult -but not impossible.

OK I'm an incoming freshman that wants to be as active as possible on and off campus. currently i have received a scholarship for band, which mean i will be marching this year. i wanted to know what were the requirements for KKPsi as well as all other social organizations.

July 20, 2009 11:15 PM
Blogger Chancellor said...

I'm pretty sure KKPsi is not on the yard at Morehouse unless something has happened within the last two months. Some organizations have minimum GPA requirements or minimum credit hour requirements. However, it's easy to get involved. You really have to find what interests you though (SGA, CASA, clubs/organizations, greek life, etc). The best thing to do is stay focused first semester and establish a strong GPA while at the same time learning the ropes and becoming slightly involved. After that everything will fall into place.

ok so im an incoming freshman and i am so excited about college life...what are some do's and dont's of the first day(of orientation, and actual classes)

Do:
Study- while in high school you use to be able to get away with not studying, most courses at Morehouse will require your attention outside of the classroom.

Go to Office Hours- utilize your professor's office hours so that they know that you care about your grade, and of course use them to answer any questions you might have about the class.

Enjoy- you are in college, away from home, and for most, on your own for the first time. Enjoy it! Don't be afraid to try new things, explore the city, etc.

Attend CASA events- great way to mix and mingle and meet people throughout the AUC. [shameless plug]

Don't:
Procrastinate- this is never good, or healthy.

Be afraid to ask questions- someone has been where you are before, and they can probably help you get to where you are going. This not only applies to your classes, but life in general.

Party you GPA Away- it's good to enjoy yourself, but don't waste your opportunity to establish a strong COMPETITIVE GPA for your future years at Morehouse. It is always easy to maintain.. but starting from the bottom and then working your way up is much, much harder.

hey i wanted to know if anyone knew why KKPSi has become inactive(are they suspended or something) then what is the common attire for the student throughout the year?? whats the campus scene like during the year?

July 26, 2009 10:20 PM
Blogger feedback said...

Jamir - Try both. You will see that not many students use their Morehouse accounts (other than to setup their facebook accounts) for the simple reason it's too hard to access and inconvenient. If that doesn't work they probably haven't activated your email account, contact the IT department.

Scheduling classes can be diffucult at times. Make sure you have a balanced, yet rigorous, schedule. I suggest taking anywhere between 15-16 hours freshman year. Typically, most freshman begin taking their core curriculum classes (e.g. English, Math (College Algebra/Pre-Calc/Calc I, etc), History, Sociology, PE, Art, and maybe an introductory class to your major). You will be assigned an advisor who will assist you during NSO.

KKPsi wasn't even on the yard my freshman year, and i'm going into my senior year. So I can't really answer that question.

Dress during NSO week and Freshman Orientation every Tuesday during the semester is business (slacks, tie, dress socks, and optional blazer).

Dress during the semester is very casual. On a typical day I wear jeans, t-shirt, etc. (unless you are in an upper-level business class, then business wear is required).

Is there any way freshman can move in early? And when do we find out who out roommates are?

This may be quite vague, but I want to know just about everything:

Orientation. What is it like? & It's the 14 of August this year, right?

July 28, 2009 7:07 PM
Blogger Justin said...

Garry - New Student Orientation (NSO) begins Tuesday, August 18th. This is when you can check into your rooms, and move on campus. NSO is comprised of numerous activities to help freshmen make the transition from high school to college. Expect to be educated on the history of Morehouse College.

I think the only people that are allowed to move on campus early are those in the band and football team. You should be able to check your room assignment on Tigernet under the "My Info" tab. Click on TigerDen and then log on. Or you could call the office at 404-215-2634.

hey I have a question. For the honors program, aftr they registered us for classes are there any other required courses or can we just choose from all of the college's classes? And is 18 the most amount of hrs we can have on our schedule? much appreciated

August 3, 2009 8:36 AM
Blogger Chancellor said...

Not sure what's going on with your TigerNet. Be sure to contact the help desk.

Travis,

yes 18 is the max. As a freshman they encourge you to take roughly 15-16 hours so you can't work your way into things slowly. If you are a science or engineering major you may end up taking 17 or so your freshman year. HP selects your honors classes for first semester. You are required to complete you are schedule (min 12 hours to be full time, 15 if you are on scholarship)
